"My Mother the Car"
Before last evening, I was certainly aware there had been a 'screwball' 60s tv show, about a guy whose mother resurrected as a car. I was aware from reading; no, I had never seen it.
Until last night
I was watching a mostly-delightful video of the openings of shows in 1966 - there was my beloved Sunday night Disney, where I brushed my teeth on one commercial, put on my jam-jams, on the next. And Flipper!
And then there was My Mother the Car
I was chagrined to see that the song presented another agenda - OF COURSE! everyone comes back! Some as a cat ... some as an alligator .... well my mother just happened to -- It was presented in a lighthearted way, with a song that was catchy and easy to sing along to (especially with the lyrics on the screen!), in a typical suburban neighborhood that anyone watching would have identified with.
And so the propaganda began
If you're 'with it', if you're trendy, then naturally, you believe in this! Oh, brother!!!
And it gave me even further gratitude for my parents, because - even tho I was just three years old at that point - they never had it playing on the set in the living room - the only one in the house at that time. I don't know if they were being very aware - they were at least being aware enough that it wasn't a good thing to expose their tender years daughter to!
The P.S. surprise to this video was that this was the year that I Dream of Jeannie started. In fact, it started right after Flipper. But I didn't see it, until I was older and caught it at friends houses. (And never liked it then, either, but that's another post ...) Now, I know! I watched Flipper ... so that means my parents had to shut the tv off right as the closing clips rolled and divert me to something else, than someone with my name being involved in the sickening-sweet rendition of an old legend about a Geni in a bottle that was about magic - something the Bible strictly prohibits.
They may not have been able to roll Bible quotes off their tongues, but my parents lived it.
Kudos to them!!
